Vitiligo, what peculiarities?

This dermatosis of the skin is characterized by the appearance of white patches on certain parts of the body. Vitiligo is caused by the loss of melanocytes which normally synthesize melanin. It is melanin which gives the skin its color, without it, the epidermis therefore loses its color. In people with vitiligo, the skin is devoid of melanocytes.

Vitiligo results from a dysfunction of the immune system in genetically predisposed people. The white patches correspond to hypopigmented spots (devoid of pigments), the hands, face and arms are often affected. Vitiligo can be segmental (less common) circumscribed to a well-defined area of ​​the skin or non-segmental (more common) starting with small spots and spreading throughout the body. The causes of this dermatosis remain poorly understood. If depigmentation is more visible on black or mixed skin, white skin is not spared by this problem. This disease is not painful and has no effect on health, the emotional and psychological impact is however significant.
