1. A fruit full of antioxidants
The main active ingredient in tomatoes is lycopene, which is a powerful antioxidant:
The tomato owes its red color to a natural pigment: lycopene. If we find lycopene in many fruits such as red fruits, watermelon, guava, papaya, red pepper or grapefruit, it is in the tomato that its concentration is the highest.
Lycopene is a major antioxidant that protects cells from root attacks. This carotenoid is also present in our body and in particular in the liver, the prostate, the plasma… We find lycopene in large quantities in the cells of the skin. It has a powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory role.
A study was carried out in 2016* by a team from the Düsseldorf Medical School in Germany on the effect of lycopene supplementation on skin health. The researchers recruited women between the ages of 40 and 50 and gave one group lycopene tablets while another group received a placebo(1). After 12 weeks, the results showed that the group given the lycopene had a significant improvement in the appearance of their skin in terms of texture, redness and roughness. The researchers concluded that lycopene supplementation may have a beneficial effect on skin health by improving its appearance and texture.
Among the other active ingredients present in the tomato, we find:
_ Vitamin C, another antioxidant that captures free radicals present in the body, partly responsible for skin aging. It is very effective on problem skin and helps to even out the complexion. More broadly, vitamin C also helps reduce fatigue and contributes to the prevention of cardiovascular diseases and neurodegenerative diseases.
